Task Force on Bamboo for Renewable Energy

Task Force on Bamboo for Renewable Energy

The Task Force on Bamboo for Renewable Energy (TFB4RE) is a group of experts with the mandate to develop INBAR Voluntary Guideline Standards (VGS), which are multi-stakeholder, consensus-developed and cost-effective in nature and intended to advise various stakeholders engaged in developing bamboo for renewable energy. These unique standards aim to cover various methods and techniques for energy production using bamboo biomass that are aligned with SDG1 (No poverty) and SDG7 (Affordable and clean energy), including thermochemical conversion (direct combustion, gasification and pyrolysis liquefaction) and biochemical conversion (anaerobic digestion and fermentation).

Objectives

INBAR’s TFB4RE objective is to provide support at national, continental and international levels:

  • Nationally, it will work on assessing and developing VGS to help inform local authorities on how to develop their own standards for renewable energy from bamboo. This is particularly relevant for all INBAR Member States.
  • Continentally, VGS developed by the TFB4RE will inform various Technical Committees (TC) under the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO) to develop dedicated bamboo energy standards for Africa. This will inform all ARSO members in the development of national standards and also support the African Continental Free Trade Area, which has been in effect since 21 March 2019.
  • Internationally, it will work on assessing and developing VGS that will serve as reference documents for the International Standard Organization (ISO) Technical Committee 296 on Bamboo and Rattan (ISO/TC 296) to build on developing international standards.
Voluntary Guideline Standards (VGS)

Since its establishment, the TFB4RE, with support from China-IFAD SSTC funding, has published three VGS:

  1. Bamboo charcoal kiln design and construction
  2. Bamboo commoditization
  3. Improved cookstoves design and construction for bamboo charcoal
