The study establishes the spatial distribution and area statistics of bamboo coverage in Malawi. Malawi is estimated to have a bamboo coverage of 466.26 km2 comprised of both indigenous and exotic species. Indigenous bamboo species include Oreobambos buchwaldii, a sub montane bamboo, Oxytenanthera abyssinica and Oldeania alpina, while the exotic bamboo species in the area include Bambusa vulgaris (Yellow bamboo), Bambusa multiplex and many others including the recently introduced Dendrocalamus asper (Giant Bamboo).
