China is home to 56 World Heritage Sites which play an important role in helping the country achieve its twin goals of peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. Bamboo is a unique feature of these World Heritage sites, as it is closely related to people’s livelihoods and use across a wide range of activities. This publication is the result of a call for case studies jointly issued by UNESCO and INBAR in 2022 which sought to collect good examples of site management with bamboo to raise awareness on carbon reduction and climate change. In total, the 15 case studies presented in this booklet demonstrate the breadth of potential that bamboo has for the sustainable development of protected areas, innovative nature-based solutions worthy of further exploration, and good practices of World Heritage sites and low-carbon development from which we could draw important lessons.
