KEY FACTS
- The Kingdom of Cambodia joined INBAR on 1 November 2019.
- Cambodia's designated focal point with INBAR is the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF).
- There are over 10 bamboo species belonging to four genera, among which the predominant bamboo species with commercial importance include Bambusa bambos, Bambusa burmanica, Bambusa blumeana, Bambusa flexuosa, Bambusa vulgaris, Dendrocalamus asper and Oxytenanthera densa (Suntra, 1995; Li, 2020)。
- Bamboos are used for a variety of purposes, including construction, handicrafts, souvenirs, and household applications. Eighteen species of rattan have been recorded. Rattan has been used for centuries by local communities for food, traditional medicines, construction materials, and furniture.
- Bamboo and rattan are scattered in the natural forest areas, especially in northeast and coastal areas of the country. According to data provided by MAFF, in 2014, there were 130,678 hectares of bamboo forest, a significant decrease from 387,400 hectares in 1960.
- While bamboo is widely used for household applications, the bamboo industry in Cambodia is mainly limited to household and small enterprise production.
- In 2019, Cambodia imported bamboo commodities worth USD 3.2 million, and exported bamboo commodities worth USD 0.4 million. Bamboo plywood is both the main products imported and the main products exported (Source: UN Comtrade database).
