The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has supported INBAR’s work even before the network’s establishment, and the two organizations have collaborated in a number of ways. In 2020, FAO and INBAR signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen collaboration on a number of key areas, including bamboo resource assessments and our understanding of bamboo and rattan’s possible contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Global Forest Goals. |

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and INBAR signed an agreement in 2021, pledging to work together to promote agribusiness and rural entrepreneurship; improving standards and certification for bamboo and rattan products; building robust value chains for bamboo and rattan products; and promoting exchange of best practices and technologies across UNIDO and INBAR’s networks. |

INBAR is a supporting partner of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030. Led by the UN Environment Programme and the FAO, the UN Decade is building a strong, broad-based global movement to ramp up restoration and put the world on track for a sustainable future. That will include building political momentum for restoration as well as thousands of initiatives on the ground. |

INBAR is a partner of the CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA). FTA is the world’s largest research for development program to enhance the role of forests, trees and agroforestry in sustainable development and food security and to address climate change. The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) leads FTA in partnership with Bioversity International, Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE), Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD), INBAR, World Agroforestry (ICRAF) and Tropenbos International (TBI). |

INBAR has been a Member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) since 2019. IUCN is an international organization working in the field of nature conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. Created in 1948, IUCN is now the world’s largest and most diverse environmental network, harnessing the knowledge, resources and reach of more than 1300 Member organizations and some 16,000 experts in a combined effort to forge and implement solutions to environmental challenges and achieve sustainable development. |

INBAR is an Observer to the three Rio Conventions: the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCDD), the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the UN Convention for Biological Diversity (UNCBD). As an Observer to these Conventions, INBAR takes part in annual Conferences of the Parties (COPs), to represent its Member States in promoting the importance of bamboo and rattan.
In December 2017, INBAR was made an Observer to the UN General Assembly (UNGA). As an Observer, INBAR attends annual meetings in New York, to promote bamboo’s inclusion in the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In June 2023, INBAR was made an Observer to the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), where INBAR advocates for facilitating South-South trade, investments, technology and knowledge transfer as well as promoting enabling policy frameworks to develop green economies with bamboo and rattan.
As well as being an Observer to the UNCCD, UNFCCC, UNCBD, UNGA and UNCTAD, INBAR works with a large number of UN organizations, including — but not limited to — the UN Office for South-South Cooperation, UN Forum on Forests, UN Environment and UN Environment World Monitoring and Conservation Centre, the UN Development Programme, UN Habitat, the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the UN, Mountain Partnership (secretariat services provided by FAO), and Global Partnership on Plastic Pollution and Marine Litter (secretariat services provided by UNEP). |

INBAR’s Secretariat is based in Beijing, China. INBAR is a member of a number of important China-based think tanks and networks, including the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development and the Belt and Road Initiative Green Development Coalition, which was formed by UN Environment and the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment in 2019. |

INBAR, through its Global Programme Team and Regional Offices, implements a number of projects which use bamboo and rattan to restore land, create or improve livelihood options, mitigate climate change, and more. Previous donors include the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation, the Global Environment Facility and the European Union.
One particularly influential donor to INBAR throughout the years has been the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), which has provided sustained support to INBAR’s work on rural poverty alleviation. In 2015, INBAR estimated that IFAD-funded activities alone have helped generate around 250,000 jobs. More information about IFAD’s support to INBAR can be found in this 2015 publication here.
