Promoting bamboo based circular economy for job creation, economic development, climate change mitigation and Adaptation in Ethiopia and Mozambique

Ethiopia and Mozambique are least developed countries that faces numerous development challenges: climate change, high level of poverty and unemployment, deforestation and land degradation; and weak institutional framework. Climate change is a serious problem both in Ethiopia and Mozambique affecting agriculture, livelihoods and ecosystems. Recurring drought is a main climate stressor in both Ethiopia and Mozambique. High intensity cyclone and floods make Mozambique one of the top ten countries impacted by climate change. The climate change projection scenarios indicate that impacts are disproportionately felt by communities’ dependent on rural-livelihood systems mainly smallholder farmers.

The current project will utilize the large untapped bamboo resource base in both Ethiopia and Mozambique to generate green jobs, economic development, and environmental management and in particular build the resilience of communities against climate change as well as contribute to climate change mitigation. The key deliverables of the project as mentioned below:

  • Improved Governance and Enabling Framework: Improved governance systems by facilitating national and sub-national strategies; establishing multi-stakeholder platforms and building associativity (300 beneficiaries: 50 % youth and women).
  • Climate Smart Sustainable Production models: Improved productive capacities, livelihoods, jobs and income of 1500 producers (50 % women and youth) through restoration and sustainable management (700 ha), capacity building, product diversification, and access to sustainable markets.
  • South-South cooperation Communication and Knowledge Management: Decision makers, community leaders, stakeholders, researchers and community have access to knowledge and technology through international, national and sub-national trainings and exchange events, established knowledge networks and IEC / social media platform.
Objective

To promote bamboo as a nature-based solution for enhancing climate change mitigation and adaptation benefits through diversified bamboo production systems in Ethiopia and Mozambique.
