Technology transfer and capacity building on bamboo scrimber, Laminated and value-added products

While traditional basketry and other craft items made out of bamboo are widely known; people wonder how round hollow bamboo culms are processed into “hardwood” like products. It requires technical knowledge and skills, along with appropriate infrastructure and raw materials for making such products, generally known as strand woven bamboo, bamboo scrimber or laminated bamboo products.

Like many Asian countries, Brunei, Malaysia and India have the required bamboo base for creating high-value products, but they lack the technical skills and technologies to harness these opportunities.  To address this issue INBAR is collaborating with the Commonwealth Educational Media Center for Asia to create Audio-Visual learning modules and organize training programs on bamboo scrimber and bamboo laminate making and their value-added products for the potential entrepreneurs of the above-mentioned countries.

Objectives
  • To develop audio-visual modules and process manual for making bamboo scrimber and laminated value-added lifestyle products.
  • Organize training programs and provide end-to-end knowledge and production techniques for making quality bamboo scrimber and lifestyle products.

2021

In 2021, INBAR and CEMCA initiated the Audio-Visual module development for making strand woven bamboo, bamboo scrimber or laminated bamboo products and their related products.

2022

In 2022 the project developed 5-hour audio visual modules on bamboo plantations and the manufacturing process of laminated composites and scrimber and their value-added products in English, Mandarin and Malay.

It also organized, in May 2022, a three-day training program on “Bamboo Scrimber, Laminated Composites and Value-Added Products” in association with CEMCA. This training was attended by more than 300 participants from over 40 countries.

INBAR also kept supporting individual entrepreneurs to access knowledge and technology to setup and scale-up bamboo scrimber and laminated composite product making.
