South-South Initiative to Promote the Sustainable Use of Bamboo as an Innovative Strategy for Climate Resilience of Smallholder Farmers in Argentina, Bolivia and Brazil

This international bamboo project aims to strengthen climate resilience, rural livelihoods, and sustainable value chains through structured knowledge exchange and technology transfer among Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, and strategic partners, including China. Despite the availability of abundant bamboo resources, these countries have yet to fully harness their potential due to technical limitations, emerging enterprise models, and weakly articulated value chains.

Building on more than 25 years of cooperation between IFAD and INBAR, as well as the experiences of the Bamboozonia project, the initiative recognizes bamboo as a strategic nature-based solution for poverty reduction and climate change adaptation. Bamboo is a perennial, drought-resistant, and multifunctional crop that integrates easily into family farming systems, degraded areas, and agroecological landscapes. Its low investment requirements and continuous production create opportunities for income diversification, with a particular focus on the inclusion of women and youth, while also contributing to soil and water conservation and the development of resilient rural infrastructure.

Implementation will be aligned with IFAD-supported programmes in the 3 countries ensuring territorial coherence, alignment with public policies, and scalability. Through South–South and Triangular Cooperation, the project will replicate and adapt validated models for bamboo management, restoration, and value addition, strengthening institutional capacities and promoting inclusive, climate-resilient rural development across Latin America.

Objectives

The general objective of this project is to enhance livelihoods and climate change resilience of smallholder farmers and rural communities in Argentina, Bolivia and Brazil by replicating, upscaling and sharing the lessons learned on bamboo sector development practices

Specific Objective

Outcome 1: Improved climate resilience of smallholder farmers by using techniques for bamboo production, use and transformation;

Outcome 2: Diversified livelihood and income generation opportunities for smallholders and rural communities by improved SMEs for value addition of bamboo;

Outcome 3:  Local institutions strengthened with knowledge and tools to effectively use bamboo as a potential tool for income generation and climate resilience.
