Ethiopia bamboo supply chain development project

Usable as food, fodder, timber and energy, bamboo can meet a variety of demands and penetrate different markets with huge economic benefits for farmers and processors. Although Ethiopia is endowed with substantial bamboo resources estimated at about 1.4 million ha, lack of sustainable forest management has led to forest depletion and degradation. The Ethiopia Bamboo Supply Chain Development Project, funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), will address these issues over the 2023 to 2024 period by developing bamboo-based supply chains for rural households while fostering innovations in technology and institutions.

The project will benefit smallholders, participatory forest management groups (bamboo growers and harvesters), youth and women (supply chain operators), SMEs, and industries, connecting them with the technologies and training crucial for adding value their products and processes. Target regions for the project include Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region; Sidama; and Addis Ababa.

Objectives

The general objective of this project is to contribute to building a circular economy and resilience to climate change through the development of bamboo-based reliable supply chain development.

Specific Objectives

  • Restore and sustainably manage 200 hectares of forest and agroforests, providing quality raw materials and mitigating climate change.
  • Improve livelihoods and income of 500 smallholder farmers, supply-chain actors, and small and medium-scale enterprises through efficient supply-chain development.
  • Establish the infrastructure and operations for primary and secondary processing, commoditization, preservation and treatment and waste management.
  • Strengthen the capacity of bamboo supply chains and enterprise development by supporting institutions and knowledge management systems.
