Participants from Manabí were involved in the construction of the bamboo prototype building.

The five-day workshop highlighted the importance of sustainable construction with bamboo in Ecuador.

From 24 to 28 July 2023, the “International Workshop on Sustainable Architecture and Construction” was held at the facilities of the Ikiam Amazon Regional University in the province of Napo in Ecuador within the framework of the Master’s Program in Architecture, with mention of the Sustainable Construction (MACS) degree developed by the university.

This training process was carried out through the project “Support for Research, Development, Innovation and Higher Education in Sustainable Construction,” financed by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and implemented by INBAR.

The inaugural event was attended by María Victoria Reyes, Dean of Ikiam Amazon Regional University, Roldán Torres, Vice Rector of Ikiam Amazon Regional University, Irene Acosta, Director of Graduate Programs, Pablo Maita, MACS Master’s Coordinator, and Pablo Izquierdo, INBAR Technical Officer.

The workshop was led by national and international experts with expertise in architecture and sustainable construction including María del Mar Barbero and Francisco Javier Neila from the Polytechnic University of Madrid along with instructors from the Ecuadorian firm Rama Estudio.

This training process integrated both a theoretical and practical approach. At the end, participants applied the newly learned concepts and worked to build a small-scale prototype on the Ikiam campus. An emblematic structure, the space is intended to embody sustainable values on the university campus, where members of the academic community can meet and share ideas in an environment built with respect for natural resources.

Seven beneficiaries of the Sustainable Construction School Workshop project with bamboo participated in this meeting, which INBAR is currently implementing in the province of Manabí with generous financial support from AECID.
