Schoolchildren explore the wonderful world of bamboo on Youth Day in Cameroon

On Youth Day in Cameroon, students from the Gamaliel Bilingual Elementary School visited INBAR’s Regional Office to learn about cultivating and making products with bamboo.
As part of the celebrations on Youth Day in Cameroon, INBAR’s Central Africa Regional Office (CARO) organized the first open day for the Gamaliel Bilingual Elementary School of Messamendongo.
With the support of teachers and supervisors, this event was held on 13 February 2024 at INBAR CARO. The day included of a variety of activities during which the 21 pupils of the school group learned about bamboo, bamboo seeds, the nursery and the workshop for producing bamboo products.

The class enjoyed the presentation on bamboo.
Through an engaging PowerPoint presentation, the children immersed themselves in the world of bamboo. They were enthusiastic and curious about the various uses of this versatile plant, and learned that it was possible to make chairs, tables, cotton buds, beds, car interiors and other structures from bamboo. Afterward, they had the chance to visit the nursery, where they saw firsthand how bamboo seeds are planted and grown. This sparked a lively discussion between them and on-site nursery staff about how to cultivate bamboo.

They visited INBAR CARO’s nursery to see firsthand how the plant grows.
Accompanied by their teachers, the students also visited the bamboo production workshop. INBAR craftsmen patiently explained to the students that most of the objects are made from bamboo stems, which are selected and cut beforehand. It was an interactive session that helped truly transform their perceptions of bamboo. Amazed by the visit, the young student Ateba declared that he would be a “bamboo engineer!”

The day carried on with a presentation given by local craftsmen on the operation of the bamboo fountain. Overall, the main goal of the day’s activities was to leave a deep impression on the minds of the younger generation, inspiring them to think about bamboo and the ways it can be used to help our world.
