UNEP video release: How entrepreneurs use bamboo for income & nature restoration

The United Nations Environment Programme recently released a video highlighting bamboo’s contributions to sustainable livelihoods.

On 15 October 2025, the United Nations (UN) counted INBAR’s Bamboo-based Restoration Initiative among four new World Restoration Flagships under the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. This is because bamboo can contribute to healing degraded lands while delivering a bevy of other green benefits. These include creating jobs, increasing income, safeguarding biodiversity, storing carbon and replacing harmful materials such as plastics.

Following that news, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) sent a crew to Uganda to document how bamboo, as a nature-based solution, is being leveraged for both economic development and environmental restoration. In addition to land restoration, the interviews highlighted bamboo’s potential for job creation and tackling climate change, positioning the plant resource to play a vital role in Uganda’s future.
