INBAR Headquarters welcomes high-level delegation from Uruguay’s Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries

Bilateral meeting signals deepening ties between INBAR and Uruguay to advance the development of the country’s bamboo resources and industry.
Marking the first anniversary of Uruguay’s accession to the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR), a high-level delegation from Uruguay’s Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) visited INBAR Headquarters in Beijing on 26 November 2025. Dr. Zhang Dongsheng, INBAR Deputy Director General, met with the delegation led by Mr. Gastón Martínez, Director General of the General Forestry Directorate of MGAP. The two sides held productive talks on deepening cooperation and advancing the development of Uruguay’s bamboo industry.

Zhang welcomed the delegation on behalf of INBAR before briefly introducing INBAR’s development and outlining its history of cooperation with Uruguay. Zhang stated that bamboo is a valuable resource that can deliver multiple benefits, with immense economic, environmental and social value. This is especially true for industrial uses, where it has untapped potential and broad applications in products, technologies and enterprises. Uruguay’s bamboo industry is still in its nascent stage. INBAR is ready to provide technical support to Uruguay in areas such as surveying the current status of bamboo resources, selecting and breeding high-quality bamboo species and exploring its potential for industrial and economic utilization. Furthermore, INBAR will assist Uruguay in formulating a medium- and long-term plan for the development of its bamboo industry to promote its healthy and sustainable development.

Martínez expressed his appreciation for INBAR’s warm reception. He stated that Uruguay highly values its friendly and cooperative relationship with INBAR and greatly appreciates the achievements of China’s bamboo industry development, as well as INBAR’s outstanding contributions to promoting the global bamboo and rattan sectors. Uruguay is currently developing policies related to the development of its bamboo industry, but lacks experience in this field. Furthermore, the extent of its bamboo resources and overall market potential remain unclear. Uruguay hopes that INBAR can provide guidance and assistance in developing its bamboo resources and industry.

Ms. Li Lan, Director of External Relations and Partnerships of INBAR, Ms. Alejandra Boccardo, Technical Advisor to the Directorate, and Mr. Martin Orlando, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Uruguay in China, also attended the meeting.

Before the meeting, delegation members visited INBAR’s bamboo and rattan showroom and were impressed by the diverse range of bamboo and rattan products.
