New regional bamboo project kicks off in Panama

Romina Ávila, Project Manager, gave a detailed report on the status of the bamboo project.
The project launch ceremony was held in the gardens of the Ministry of Environment headquarters on 7 June 2023.
This year, INBAR began the regional project Promoting bamboo as a nature-based solution for livelihood development and environmental management for climate change mitigation and adaptation in the Latin American and Caribbean region financed by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) within the framework of its ARAUCLIMA program.
The main objective of the project is to promote South-South cooperation to overcome the challenges of climate change using bamboo as a nature-based solution. For this, bamboo will be incorporated into action-research processes to boost the resilience of rural households in Costa Rica, Panama, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
On 7 June 2023, INBAR together with the Ministry of the Environment of Panama in Panama City officially launched this project. The initiative will take place in the province of Coclé and the district of Penonomé. The project will last 30 months, with a particular focus on the conservation of water sources and promoting ecotourism.
Project staff will directly collaborate with the Ministry of the Environment of Panama, the National Bamboo Commission (CONABA), and universities to strengthen training and research processes. It ultimately seeks to benefit rural producer families, technicians, community leaders, specialists, researchers as well as public, private and academic actors who work with bamboo or are interested in this natural resource and its applications.
