Guadua: A strategic pillar for Colombia’s sustainable development

Guadua is driving Colombia’s journey toward sustainable development, blending economic growth with environmental resilience.

Guadua, a native Colombian bamboo species, has been a vital resource in the country’s culture and livelihood since pre-Columbian times. Today, it holds immense potential to drive sustainable development, boost the economy, and tackle environmental challenges. Recognizing its strategic value, the forum-workshop titled “Guadua Bamboo: A Strategic Resource for Colombia’s Sustainable Development”, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and INBAR, brought together key stakeholders from the public, private, and civil society sectors. Held on 11-12 December 2024, at the Black Tower Premium Hotel in Bogotá, the event served as a platform for forging alliances and outlining concrete actions to strengthen the guadua value chain in Colombia.

The forum aimed to enhance collaboration among government ministries, the National Guadua/Bamboo Production Chain Council, its agro-industrial stakeholders, and other strategic actors. The objective was to develop a two-year action plan aligned with the mandates of Law 2206 of 2022. This legislation provides a public policy framework to promote the sustainable use of Guadua in sectors such as construction, agro-industry, and broader industry, ensuring environmental sustainability and ecosystem services vital for climate change mitigation.

International success stories from China and Ecuador were presented during the forum, showcasing how the sustainable management of Guadua can act as a driver for socioeconomic and environmental development. Participants also analyzed Guadua’s contributions to Colombia’s National Development Plan and its potential integration with other public policies.

Interactive workshops fostered open dialogue among participants, emphasizing Guadua’s significant contributions to Colombia’s sustainable development goals. Key focus areas included:

The event featured prominent participants, including Mr. Pablo Jácome Estrella, INBAR Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, and Mr. Pablo Roberto Izquierdo Salvador, INBAR Regional Technical Officer. More than 30 representatives from key national entities contributed to the discussions, among them Dr. Gustavo Rojas, Director of Forestry and Agricultural Chains at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Engineer Juliana Zúñiga, Secretary of the Guadua/Bamboo Chain and Agro-Industry. The gathering also included departmental councilors, representatives from the Ministries of Housing, City and Territory, and Environment and Sustainable Development, as well as stakeholders from AGROSAVIA, ICA, INCOTEC, decentralized autonomous corporations, academia, and the private sector. This diverse and multisectoral participation facilitated constructive dialogue and laid the groundwork for actionable strategies to advance the bamboo sector.

Key outcomes included the identification of strategic alliances and priority actions for implementing the Guadua Production Chain Action Plan. These actions encompass developing specific public policies, securing funding for innovative projects, strengthening local production capacities, and promoting Guadua as a viable solution for sustainable national development. Furthermore, the forum underscored the need for synergies between public, private, and academic sectors to advance research, innovation, and guadua utilization across industries, leveraging its economic, environmental, and social potential.

Colombia’s leadership in promoting Guadua as a strategic resource sets an important precedent for the region and the world. This forum-workshop was a pivotal step in positioning Guadua bamboo as an effective tool for climate change mitigation, economic recovery and ecosystem conservation. The collaboration achieved among diverse stakeholders will foster innovative, sustainable solutions, benefiting rural communities and advancing a greener, more inclusive future. Guadua bamboo, with its immense potential, is more than a natural resource; it is a symbol of resilience and sustainability for Colombia.
