INBAR donates two bamboo pavilions to FAO

The bamboo pavilions symbolize INBAR and FAO’s shared mission to promote cooperation and sustainable development on the international stage.

Two new bamboo pavilions were unveiled at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome on 14 October 2025, marking the organization’s 80th anniversary.

FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu attended the unveiling ceremony and delivered remarks, while Prof. Jiang Zehui, Co-Chair of the INBAR Board of Trustees, delivered a congratulatory video message. Li Lan, Director of INBAR’s External Relations and Partnerships, also joined the ceremony and participated in the unveiling.

The two unique bamboo pavilions, one square and one round, are named “Pavilion of Games” (Bo Yi) and “Pavilion of Harmony” (He Xie). Qu emphasized that global progress in food and agriculture depends on cooperation and harmony, which are vital to ending hunger and malnutrition. He thanked Jiang, expressing his appreciation for her leadership and vision. He noted that the two bamboo pavilions embody FAO’s spirit of harmony and dialogue, offering a welcoming space for staff, delegates and visitors to rest and converse. He added that bamboo has become a global symbol of sustainability, resilience and beauty.

In her video message, Jiang congratulated FAO on eight decades of achievements in building more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agricultural and food systems. Bamboo has a wide range of uses, particularly in architecture, where it serves as a sustainable building material with a long history and promising future. For this reason, bamboo is often called the “steel of the plant world” for its strength, flexibility and low carbon footprint. The two pavilions utilize the original bamboo structure, reflecting eco-friendly, low-carbon design principles and showcase bamboo’s potential to improve living environments and enhance quality of life. She expressed her hope that these two pavilions will provide an elegant addition to FAO headquarters, allowing visitors from around the world to experience the unique natural and cultural charm of bamboo.

The two bamboo pavilions complement each other in form and meaning. They symbolize INBAR and FAO’s shared mission to promote cooperation and coordinated action for sustainable development through multilateral mechanisms on the international stage.

The unveiling ceremony was presided over by Wu Zhimin, Director of FAO’s Forestry Division.

The pavilions were built by Hangzhou Bangbo Technology Co., Ltd. The unveiling ceremony brought together over 50 participants, including FAO staff, INBAR representatives, and guests from relevant partner organizations.
