New Director General for INBAR

INBAR welcomes H.E. Mr. Teshome Toga Chanaka as its sixth Director General.

INBAR is delighted to announce the Council’s approval of the appointment of H.E. Mr. Teshome Toga Chanaka as INBAR’s new Director General.

H.E. Mr. Teshome most recently served as Commissioner of the National Rehabilitation Commission of Ethiopia from 6 January 2023 to 13 March 2024. During his long professional career, he has occupied senior leadership positions within Ethiopia’s government, including Minister of Public Enterprises and Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture.

H.E. Mr. Teshome also has extensive experience in diplomacy both at bilateral and multilateral levels. He has represented his country as Ambassador in 17 countries and three continents, including Ghana, Egypt, Kenya, France, Belgium and China. As Ambassador, he was also accredited to EU institutions in Brussels and acted as the Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to UNESCO as well as to UNEP and UN-Habitat. He presided over several international conferences, including the 120th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Conference, and chaired the 30th African Parliamentary Union (APU). He participated in various international conferences and led delegations to IPU, APU, IPU IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority on Development) and ACP-EU JPA (Joint Parliament Assembly).

During his candidate interview, H.E. Mr. Teshome highlighted his wealth of experience in both government and diplomacy. He further mentioned that this combination of managerial, leadership, planning, reforming and policymaking experience has equipped him with the necessary vital skills to successfully execute the mandate of INBAR Director General.

H.E. Mr. Teshome will commence his position as INBAR Director General on 1 April 2024, as the current incumbent, H.E. Mr. Ali Mchumo, concludes his five-year term.
