Bamboo and rattan: The right path

This is an adapted translation from the article “Rattan and bamboo: The right path” from the Cameroon Tribune.

The Minister of External Relations, Lejeune Mbella Mbella and the Regional Director of the Central Africa Regional Office of the International Bamboo and Rattan Organisation, René Kaam hold a meeting last Thursday on ways to boost the bamboo and rattan sector.

Bamboo and rattan are a good niche of economic opportunities to be exploited and make profitable. Cameroon is aware of that. In fact, during the November 2021 parliamentary session, the President of the Republic, Paul Biya received the pass to adhere to the agreement creating the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan, today known as the International Bamboo and Rattan Organisation (INBAR), created in Beijing, China in 1997. In the perspective of the effective implementation aimed at making this accession profitable, the Regional Director of Central Africa of this International Organisation, met the Minister of External Relations on Thursday, 10 February 2022. For more than an hour, Lejeune Mbella Mbella and René Kaam scrutinised the level of collaboration put in place by Cameroon and this Organisation with the aim of giving it a boost. With the Minister, “we reviewed the state of collaboration between the organisation that I represent and the Government of Cameroon. Given its position in Central Africa, Cameroon enjoys a considerable advantage. We believe this joint approach will be a win-win”, he said at the end of the hearing.

Cameroon is not just a member of INBAR. In addition to being the Organisation’s Council Chair, the country has just joined the Board of Trustees. It should also be noted that the organisation’s Central Africa Office is located in Yaoundé. All these factors reflect Cameroon’s readiness and willingness to work for the smooth running of the organisation. For this reason, René Kaam did not miss the opportunity to express his gratitude to the government. “We have had multifaceted support from the government, not only in our installation but also in the implementation of activities in Cameroon and in the sub-region. For that, we thank the Government of Cameroon for its support”, he concluded. All that remains is to intensify the collaboration between Cameroon and INBAR.
