Introducing the INBAR Garden at the International Horticultural Exhibition 2024 Chengdu
The INBAR Garden maintains the original terrain and vegetation as much as possible, making full use of low-carbon and eco-friendly bamboo to create a modern West Shu Bamboo Culture Exhibition Garden.
The much-anticipated International Horticultural Exhibition 2024 Chengdu (Chengdu Expo) will be held from 26 April to 28 October. The theme of this year’s Chengdu Expo is “Park City, Beautiful Habitat,” with the concept of “Green and Low Carbon, Conservation and Sustainability, Sharing and Inclusiveness.” INBAR will be attending the Chengdu Expo this year and has built a unique bamboo garden. We look forward to your visit!
Covering an area of 5800 square meters, the INBAR Garden features abundant bamboo. The garden maintains the original terrain and vegetation as much as possible, making full use of low-carbon and eco-friendly bamboo to create a modern West Shu Bamboo Culture Exhibition Garden divided into three sections: West, Central and East.

The West Section features the Bamboo & Rattan Expo. Both sides of the main entrance of the area reveal bamboo plaiting walls, welcoming visitors to the garden. After that, visitors will arrive at the Fish-Shaped Bamboo Pavilion. The high-rising interior space is decorated with Baroque architecture, presenting a unique visual feast for visitors.
The Central Section focuses on Bamboo Culture Science Popularization & Experience, where visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the natural bamboo landscape. The area also hosts rare bamboo species growing around the Green Bamboo Pavilion. The different shapes and colors of the species coalesce to form a unique area for learning about bamboo diversity.
The East Section is home to the Bamboo Culture Exchange & Reception, where a beautiful pond and the Tranquil Bamboo Pavilion can be found. This landscape abounds with flowers, bamboo and flowing water. These elements — lotuses covering the water, bamboo embankments, the Melodious Bamboo Pavilion, bamboo bridge, rockeries and waterfall — resemble an ancient painting. Throughout the six-month-long event, INBAR will work with worldwide partners to hold bamboo and rattan exhibitions, popular science demonstrations, and other activities to vividly demonstrate the potential of bamboo and rattan as part of greener lifestyles.
The Fish-Shaped Bamboo Pavilion
The Fish-Shaped Bamboo Pavilion is located in the west of the INBAR Garden, covering an area of 280 square meters. The Pavilion is in a unique shape, with the fish’s head forming the entrance and its tail the exit. With its auspicious position and layout, the Fish-Shaped Bamboo Pavilion symbolizes “Wealth and abundance year after year.” Its internal structure includes three levels, consisting of main columns, secondary columns and purlins. With its high ceiling and vaulted arches, it is reminiscent of historic European buildings. The Fish-Shaped Bamboo Pavilion reflects the ingenious application of round bamboo in modern architectural design.

The Tranquil Bamboo Pavilion
The Tranquil Bamboo Pavilion is located in the east of the INBAR Garden. Built beside the water, it faces winding hills, cascading waterfalls and a hexagonal bamboo pavilion, with a tranquil bamboo forest at its back. The pavilion is built in a traditional style — the main body is made of wood, and decorative materials are made of engineered bamboo.

Bamboo pavilions
The Green Bamboo Pavilion and the Melodious Bamboo Pavilion are made of round bamboo and engineered bamboo. They explore the application of bamboo in traditional landscape architecture and gardening, as a replacement for wood, steel and other commonly used building materials.

Bamboo bridges
The two bamboo bridges in the Garden are made of engineered bamboo. They explore the application of modern engineered bamboo as a replacement for wood, concrete and other commonly used building materials in landscaping and outdoor sites.

INBAR at previous Expos
Bamboo and rattan are among the most important non-wood forest resources in the world. They are self-renewing, versatile and an integral part of many people’s lives and lifestyles. INBAR has been invited to take part in numerous International Horticultural Expositions in the past, building Gardens which demonstrate low-carbon and sustainable lifestyles with bamboo.
In 2011, the INBAR Garden at the Xi’an Exposition won the Gold Award, Ecological Demonstration Award, Excellent Architecture Award and Best Organization and Management Award. In 2014, the INBAR Garden at the Qingdao Exposition won the Outdoor Garden Competition Award. In Qingdao, the INBAR Garden also received senior leaders including Wang Yang, then Vice Premier of China, and a number of ambassadors and diplomatic envoys to China.
In 2019, the INBAR Garden at the Beijing Exposition won an Award from the Organizing Committee. The original Bamboo Eye Pavilion, with its innovative bamboo and rattan exhibits and cultural activities, made the INBAR Garden a star attraction. Many world leaders, including César Litardo Caicedo, President of Ecuador’s National Assembly, and Mercedes Fernández, then-Vice President of Peru, as well as a number of ambassadors to China and senior Chinese leaders visited the INBAR Garden at the Beijing Exposition.
In 2021, the INBAR Garden won two awards at the Yangzhou Expo: One from the International Horticultural Producers Association and one from the International Exhibition Park. The INBAR Garden was inspired by nature to create a landscape full of green bamboo. Numerous VIPs visited, including Hon. Mr. Cao Jianming, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China, Hon. Mme. Zhang Meiying, former Vice Chair of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and H.E. Mr. Martin Mpana, representative of the INBAR Council Chair and Ambassador of Cameroon, as well as others.
After the Expos, INBAR Gardens often remain standing as permanent exhibitions, continuing to showcase bamboo and rattan’s charm and inspiring visitors with their low-carbon and green concepts. In the future, together with our partners around the world, INBAR will promote the unique role and great potential of bamboo and rattan in more environmentally friendly lifestyles.
