BASP conference wraps up in Beijing

The International Symposium on Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastic took place in Beijing, China from 7 to 8 November 2023. For coverage of the first half of the event, please see the earlier article on the INBAR website.
After keynote presentations finished, parallel sessions on related topics were held, drawing large crowds with robust discussion. High-level representatives also attended the sessions such as H.E. Mr. Martin Mpana, Ambassador of the Republic of Cameroon to China seen above. The four parallel sessions were organized according to the following categories.
Parallel Session 1: Enabling Policy to Support the Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastic Initiative

This session hosted 11 presentations that took a closer look at what policies are necessary to actualize the Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastic (BASP) Initiative. From the perspective of pioneers in the bamboo industry, practical paths were laid forward to facilitate development, from addressing difficulties in policy proposal, formulation, and implementation to advocating for the healthy overall growth of the sector. The session ultimately provided guidance for key decision-makers in the bamboo industry.
Parallel Session 2: Resources Cultivation and Supply

With a more technical approach in mind, this session featured 9 lectures that put many hot research topics under its crosshairs, from innovation in the creation of new high-quality bamboo germplasm resources to the efficient cultivation of crucial bamboo resources. Presenters also addressed other important areas such as the necessity of utilizing monitoring technologies and digital platforms for bamboo stands which also have the powerful capacity to perform carbon sequestration. Productive exchange was held on resource management and supply systems, particularly mentioning cutting-edge theories in the field and prospective areas for future development.
Parallel Session 3: Industry and Enterprise Development for Green Economic Development

Bamboo industry entrepreneurs participated in this session, sharing their practical experiences and knowledge. There was great enthusiasm for the opportunities in the sector, especially for generating economic profit and delivering environmental benefits, and many other avenues for exploration once challenges are overcome. A number of inevitable trends were outlined by participants: Technological innovation; industrial upgrading; large-scale and standardized management; enhanced consumer awareness; fostering a new generation of entrepreneurs; creating and promoting BASP brands; and unleashing market forces to lead green progress.
Parallel Session 4: Research and Innovation in Bamboo Products as a Plastic Substitute

For the final session of the day, experts and researchers presented on some the key technologies for unlocking new applications with bamboo, including bamboo fiber composite materials, specialized manufacturing and research equipment, and the continued R&D into BASP products. In particular, food packaging and automotive interior design were two identified areas which can greatly benefit from the introduction of bamboo related materials with solid foundations for both.
Closing Ceremony

With the parallel sessions wrapped up, it was time to place a ribbon on the proceedings. The closing ceremony featured a video highlight of the event, which captured all participants in a charming light as they spoke with authority on topics, listened intently to other experts, and conversed happily in the halls. Indeed, there was energy in the air as new friendships were forged and old friends reunited over their mutual love of bamboo. Lu Wenming, INBAR Deputy Director General, gave the final summary report of the Symposium and officially closed the event.
