The International Standard Organization (ISO) has now officially published the standard ISO 23067:2022 Grading system for rattan: Requirements and Classification. The standard has been developed by the ISO Technical Committee (ISO/TC) 296 Working Group 4 convened by INBAR.

As the document specifies “The grading of rattan products is important to eliminate confusion and misunderstanding between the sellers and the buyers both at the national and international levels. Currently, grading and classification of rattan vary significantly from one country to another…”

The standard provides guidelines and requirements to sort and classify rattan cane materials (poles and derivatives) based on physical properties, quality and market values. It addresses the existing inconsistencies among producers and exporters of rattan raw materials and products among INBAR Member States and provides a consensus on the method and system of grading and classifying rattan and the products made from it.

This is the second international ISO standard on rattan after the ISO 23066:2021 Vocabulary related to rattan materials and products published in 2021.

INBAR, alongside its partners, will continue to disseminate and promote the adoption of standardized guidelines for bamboo and rattan to improve the international trade of bamboo and rattan raw material and products.

ISO 23067:2022 can be purchased on ISO’s website.
