Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastic at 2023 Hainan Expo

Forum at important consumer fair champions bamboo as a critical tool for fighting plastic pollution.

On 12 April 2023, as part of the third China International Consumer Products Expo, the forum on Promoting Green Consumption: Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastic kicked off in Haikou, Hainan Province, China.

Professor Jiang Zehui, Co-Chair of the INBAR Board of Trustees, delivered a video speech at the forum. Her speech highlighted bamboo as a versatile nature-based solution capable of delivering numerous ecological, economic, and social benefits. Since it can be developed into many products as a low-carbon, durable and renewable material, it can also play an important role in addressing the transboundary problem of plastic pollution.

In her speech, Jiang pointed out the immense potential of bamboo for contributing to a global plastic ban, other plastic restrictions and green development.

Later, INBAR Deputy Director General Lu Wenming took the stage and gave a speech on the Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastic Initiative and Background.

In his presentation, Lu explained INBAR’s history in promoting bamboo as a substitute for plastics.

This forum was hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of China, the People’s Government of Hainan Province, the State Forestry and Grassland Administration, and INBAR. The aim was to build an exchange platform, implement the Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastic Initiative jointly launched by the Chinese government and INBAR, promote the reduction of plastic pollution, address climate change, and accelerate the achievement of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
